SharePoint Home Drive web part provides a file explorer view to a home drive by appending the current users login name (SAMAccountName) to the UNC Path provided.Utilised with Audiences (MOSS / SPS2010 only) this can by used based on user role.
As a SharePoint consultant who has worked in many government and educational institutions, home drives provisioned from Active Directory and mapped (via group policy) to My Documents is common place.Although MOSS can be used for storage, sometimes this cannot be realistic due to budget or the required architecture changes. This means that MOSS is implemented along side File Shares etc. The web part was developed to aid end user buy in. It implements end users home drives into MOSS to ensure that whatever the end user needs (personal files, information, search etc...) can found in the new MOSS system.Currently the Page Viewer Web Part supplied in WSS and MOSS cannot take variables such as %username% (as used in Windows). This simple but effective web part simply appends the current logged in username to the supplied UNC Path (\fileserverusername) and places the URL into an IFrame.Utilised with Audiences (MOSS only), this web part can be used multiple times to deal with different user roles, where File Share paths maybe different (Teacher, Student, Admin Staff for example).Ensuring Search is configured to index the file shares means that the user can truly use MOSS for the central integration piece of their IT environment.
