It's amazing how developer's find various ways to accomplish tasks and create hacks in SharePoint.
KPI field type is simple so you can add them as columns and focus on what users want. If you're like me who would rather solve business problems rather than code a visual representation of key performance indicators (KPI) or customize SharePoint pages on a "regular" basis, then, might as well invest on such an add-on.
