Great End User Tool

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I like it and the ability to copy the metadata is something that we are often asked for. It is also good the way you can change settings if you receive errors.

My one concern is that it is a little expensive. If it was half hte price I think many companies would jump at it.

Product Reviews

Pros It does what it says and does it well
Cons A little expensive

SharePoint Rich Text Boost

SharePoint Boost are becoming the new market leader in SharePoint webparts and are seeing the real customer needs.

Have a look at one of their less heralded webpart that helps with Accessibility - 'Text size zoom'.

Document Management

Strange Name But Does Job

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Many of the Office Talk customers have a requirement to scan documents into their SharePoint Document Libraries and for a basic fix Dark Blue Duck is the package to use.

It is very easy to install and just adds a menu item to the Actions tab in the Document Library. This means if they have a scanner attached to their PC then they can scan documents straight in.

Dark Blue Duck goes further with adding metadata and bulk uploading but this perhaps over complicate a simple requirement.

We will continue to recommend it but maybe the name Dark Blue Duck is a bit miss-leading.

A Relief To All SharePoint Managers

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful
For any middle to large sized organisation who are using either MOSS or WSS this is the SharePoint Management console you have been waiting for.

It really does do the lot and lets you really take control and be a SharePoint Big Brother. If your an IT Manager responsible for SharePoint you have problem been asked what permissions has so and so got or can you give 'so and so A' the same permissions as 'so and so B'. With ControlPoint you can do this with a few clicks.

On its own the permission settings get my vote, but there is much much more. Like the ability to change the logo on all the sites from just one place. So the next time those clever marketing guys say we have just redesigned the company logo to change the shade of green you can make the change on all of the sites in under a minute.

The more you look into ControlPoint 3 the more you realise just what you have been missing and I don't just mean the lovely graphs.

This is one SharePoint application I would happily recommend.

Search

Simple Way To Improve Search

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
SharePoint lets itself down with the lack of functionality on the out of the box searching. Many customers are disappointed when they can't find words insisde words or cannot use wildcards.

Ontolica is reasonably priced and after a quick painless install can soon be adding a number of new Search webparts to sites.

Once you have played with the trial version you will want to keep this functionality forever.

One day Microsoft SharePoint will catch up but until then Ontolica will keep winning converts.

The ideal Search solution.

Product Reviews

Pros Trial version, easy to install and lots of configuration options.
Cons SharePoint should really do this itself.

Finaly Cascaded Lookup

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Without fails when I and other Officetalk SharePoint Consultants are assisting with SharePoint Projects we get the dreaded question. "Yes, but how do I add another level to the list?". OK the wording changes but they all want to have a drop-down list based on the entry they entered on a previous list.

The basic SharePoint Lookup feature is quite basic and just gives a list of the entries on another field on the current site. Yes, with SharePoint Designer and Data Views you can combine data from lists on several sites but it is quite a complex process. Out of the box SharePoint falls short here, but SharePoint Boost's Cascaded Lookup takes it to the next level.

Being a football fan (the great Aston Villa) I have used Cascaded Lookup to set up a European Players list. It starts with all the European Countries and the leagues in each and then has a list for each of the teams in each league. So now using Cacaded Lookup the user can enter an individual players details and have a field called 'Team' that is filtered first by Country and then by League.

For example for Kaka we enter 'Spain' as Country and this lists the Spanish leagues. We then choose 'La Liga' and this lists all the La Liga clubs and from there we choose Barcelona.

Cascaded Lookup is simple but a very useful tool.

Product Reviews

Pros Easy to install
Reasonable price
Free 30 day trial
Great for filtering field entries (eg select Country filtered by continent
Quick response to Support Emails
Cons Gets confusing when trying to add a secondary filter (eg filtering City by Continent and then by Country)

CAD Finally works with SharePoint

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Finally the Drawing Office can have no excuse for not using SharePoint. CADnection fills in one of the gaps that SharePoint has had with the ability to easily upload and edit CAD drawings on SharePoint.

If you use CAD and SharePoint you must take a look at this software.

Well organised courses by highly knowledgeable SharePoint Trainers. The course at a Golf Course Hotel in Leicester are a great enjoyment. The highlights aren't just the dinners but Combined Knowledge seem to think about even the smallest details.

If you want a SharePoint course in UK look no further than Combined Knowledge.
