The BDLC directly connects real SharePoint lists with external LOB data, e.g. in databases like SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, MySQL, Informix, Excel, Access, Text-Files etc. and allows to define notifications and workflows to take business actions, if external business data records are changed.

The BDLC provides the COMPLETE read-only features of a common SharePoint list (views, sorting, grouping, filtering) for almost any external data source with 3 simple inputs in the list settings only:

  • Enter the connection string for your external data source.
  • Enter a select statement that is supported by your external data source.
  • Enter primary key(s), to make use of advanced features (fast batch update in background, modified data only).

Then you can create the SharePoint list structure based on your selected result set with one click only and update the data items. If a primary key is available, modified data is updated only in the list with very high performance (background batch update). So you can enable workflow or change notifications per RSS or email to take business actions, if your external LOB data records are changed.

The SharePoint Business Data List Connector comes with an robust installer and is available for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS, all editions) and also for the free Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS).

Easy-to-use Business Data Connector

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful
Very nice tool, just connected data from sql server, various xml files (static on some fileserver) and an excel sheet, now I'm writing on a webpart to display the data from these (now 4) Lists in one place (lookups on the xml data lists, linking excel data with sql data, awesome...)

Installation was simple, just rollout the setup, no deployment with stsadm needed.
Now create your list you wish to fill with the external data. A standard generic list will be created, in its listsettings you can find the bdlc settings. Fill in connection strings (for sql server i use net-string first, but errors occured, so i take oledb string which worked), select command, create the liststructure an update the content, with these 4 steps your new list is ready configured an filled with data. Each step will be validated in background, so you usually dont create crap lists ;)
There's a list named "BDLC configurationlist", there you can change the update interval for the timerjob. Thats it, ready to use just like an ordinary SPList (so, it IS an ordinary SPList ;))

Product Reviews

Pros easy installation / deployment via installer
* site admin can configure connection to database via settings list
* allows various kinds of connections (sql server, excel, files, sap...)
* uncountable possibilities to work with these lists further on
* connection settings stored encrypted in a config list.
Cons no updating possibilities the other way: changes in the lists will be overwritten on the next timerjob execution, no sync to my files, so sometimes that will be nice (esp. on my xml settings files i have)
