Idera SharePoint Performance Monitor is a free monitoring tool that enables easy monitoring of critical performance counters for SharePoint, IIS and Windows Operating Systems. Performance Monitor  can be downloaded and installed to monitor as many WFEs as necessary. It can be installed in any client machine that has access to the WFE. 

After installing Performance Monitor, simply launch the application and specify the WFE machine and URL for the site you would like to be monitored. Performance Monitor provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) which can also be run in your system tray. It does not install anything on the WFE server. All the access is done remotely from the client machine where Performance Monitor  was installed. Performance Monitor will monitor as many machines as you want but only one at a time.
 
Performance Monitor  monitors the following aspects of the Farm\WFE:

  • SharePoint
  • Current and Maximum connections
  • SharePoint latency
  • Availability
  • Version
  • Service Pack
  • IIS, IIS Availability, IIS Version
  • ASP, ASP Version
  • OS
  • Memory
  • CPU
  • Processor
  • Service Pack
  • .Net version

Summary:
Good if you have absolutely no monitoring of your SharePoint site or want an easy way to understand how your SharePoint site is doing.

However IIS, and Windows Server provide more functionality than this tool if you have the knowledge set to support it. If you only want it to monitor site up time and down time keep in mind that most website monitoring software out there can do this and is also available free and most of this software has more functionality than this tool supplies.

Detailed Review:
A terrific little tool if you want to see how things are at a glance and receive email alerts when it can no longer connect to the site it monitors. I could see this being really helpful when you need immediate notification of a SharePoint site going down. Any user can probably understand the interface as it's pretty simple.

For someone who is running their own SharePoint server or doesn't have dedicated IT staff this could be a wonderful tool.

The thing is that out of the box your Windows Server should provides more indepth performance and IIS monitoring solutions (from what I can see) and since the free version of this product is pretty limited in what it monitors/how you can configure reports I would recommend that a professional (dedicated IT staff) organization shouldn't really be looking at free solutions like this, or should be looking at more comprehensive solution sets.

Cons 1. Not a community release with source code, so you cannot extend it or customize it.
2. Simple set of 6 'reports' via visual indication that only shows a window of information. Cannot generate larger reports for usage over months etc with this tool without manual intervention.

Good tool for the price (free).

Pros Nice tool for getting a quick glimps of performance without setting up a bunch of Perfmon counters. Works fine with SP2010 too.
Cons Only useful when looking at it. Email alerts are not configurable enough... I don't need to get boy-who-cried-wolf alerts all the time when there are 10 millisecond spikes in response time, I just need to know if it stays slow/resources are chewed up for a significant amount of time. Good thing it's free.

tried and uninstalled as you need to check the screen all the time.
email notification did not work for me.
was not able to add my own KPIs to monitor
seems to give false alarms especially when either the network or the server is overloaded.

Overall the product is good for the price but if you want to seriously look at stats then you will need to purchase the full version at $900+. The full tool does not appear to have a trial so its hard to wiegh in on its worth.
So this product is again great for its price but dont think you can use this as your main source of monitoring your environment.
